Physical Activity
Active Breaks Challenge
For the month of November and December, we have been committed to a movement break each day for 4 weeks as part of the Bizzy Breaks initiative for Bizzy bodies and Bizzy minds. Each class recorded their movement breaks daily on our Active Breaks Chart. Bizzy breaks is a routine established by the Irish Hearts Foundation whereby the children are led by a series of warm up, energetic, stretching in order to get them moving and increase their heart rate. We also engaged in some mindfulness activities which help the children to focus along with just dance videos and simple games to increase physical activity and social activity.
Morning Dance Aerobics
Every Friday, the children have been dancing their socks off by partaking in Aerobics sessions lead by the Active School Team. Pupils are motivated to have fun whilst learning new dances to popular chart songs.
Santa Dash
The whole school took part in a Santa Dash run for Active School. We walked /ran from the school to the G.A.A. pitch. We all dressed up in our festive attire. Great fun was had by all and we raised funds for St. Vincent de Paul in the process.
Active School Walkway
The Active School Committee thoroughly enjoyed mapping out the school walkway along with the help of 6thclass. The 6th class took responsibility for the mapping aspect whilst the committee organised the route and corresponding orienteering worksheets. Well done to all involved. We are looking forward to launching it during Active School’s Week.
Run Around Ireland Challenge
For the month of April and May, we have been completing our Virtual Run Around Ireland Challenge. Every day, all the children got a break from their classrooms to get outside into the fresh air to run as many
laps as they can of the astro pitch to reach some of the landmarks around Ireland. The children felt energised when they went back to class and found that they could concentrate better on their work for the afternoon. Not only are the children improving their running skills and fitness levels, they are having fun, being social and also learning about the landmarks around Ireland.
Both the Junior and Senior room are striving to run 11 laps a day which is equivalent to 1 mile. Well done to all our runners. It has been a huge success so far.
Haka as Gaeilge
We have been perfecting the haka on daily basis. It’s a great way of getting the blood flowing and the bodies energised on a morning whilst learning Irish at the same time.

Active Break Time
Our lunch breaks are a hive of activity with each room having a set of equipment that they can use at break times to play and invent games with their classmates. The equipment includes basketballs, footballs, skipping ropes and hula hoops.
